In order to shield the population from the increasing cost of petrol the government is exploring options to help. To clarifythe situation, finance minister Shaukat Tarin, presided over an assembly of the Macro-Economic Advisory Group (MEAG) in the Finance Division to discuss the question.

One of the participants reported to the media that they had discussed strategies to aid the middle class from the rising cost of living. The participants discussed proposals such as subsidised fuel or tax relief.
In light of this report, there is speculation that the government may create a scheme to offer subsidized fuel. The program could be similar in concept to popular Ehsaas Sehat Card that provides healthcare at a reduced cost for the general public.

It is important to remember that the government had also considered a similar plan in the month of October last year, following the increase in petrol prices. The cabinet of the federal government with the President Obama in the chair considered a plan to provide the fuel at a reduced cost to motorcycles or rickshaws as well as the owners of public transport vehicles. However, nothing was ever done about it.

Is this not a thought that is popular?

It appears that the government is trying to find ways to reduce the cost of petrol for the general public. It is yet to be determined what kind of relief to the masses. The idea is attracting mixed reaction.

According to some internet users that the idea of giving Ehsaas cards for every item is not a smart plan as it could put pressure on the economy. They suggested that petrol prices must be determined by the market and the government should lower taxes.

However on the other hand, this MEAG meeting also addressed an increase in minimum wages and income as well as internships (for people who are unemployed and educated) as well as economic reforms specifically in the energy industry, and then build upon the current growth pace that has seen 5.6 percent growth in GDP and a 15% increase in exports, more than 10% more taxes paid and remittances, and record-breaking tax collections by boosting confidence in business and removing obstacles to business, as well as ensure that the policies remain consistent.

The session outlined the macroeconomic indicators that are essential to Pakistan’s economy. MEAG members expressed their satisfaction with the improvement in the economy.
